CHRISTMAS A HALLMARK MYTH

CHRISTMAS A HALLMARK MYTH

I grew up in the Midwest during the end of what climatologists call the Little Ice Age; a short period of time when the Northern Hemisphere was supposedly much colder than normal. What I recall about winter, up through my undergraduate college days, are frequent cold snaps and snow falling shortly after Thanksgiving accompanied by a season-long hard freeze. We built snowmen, had snowball fights and sledded down a hill at the local cemetery for the entire month of December. Snow continued to fall throughout the month, and rivers, lakes, and ponds were solid enough to support ice skatingand/or the occasional teenaged driver slipping and sliding in his hotrod from shore to shore. We did not have sleigh ridesthose disappeared (along with stringing popcorn) with my parents generation due to the invention of the snowplow. Sudden thought: Once in a while wed bully each other by taking someone down and washing his face with snowgave one a nice ruddy complexion, yknow?
Starting about the second week of December, raucous office parties took place, and in the streets, inebriated carolers reeled from house to house; except carolers from churches (I surmise) remained sober. They sang longer, but not as loud as their intoxicated counterparts. Inside, mistletoe hung, chestnuts were roasted over a fireplace, bowls of nuts with nutcrackers were on tables, and mothers made divinity and fudge. Christmas trees had simulated snow called angel hair wrapped around the bottom, a substance made from spun glass that children were warned not to touch. Bubble lights hung on the tree with homemade red and green chains, and tinsel was liberally thrown from top to bottom. I also remember little gumdrop trees on tables, and bowls of red, green, and white hard candy. The latter makes my teeth hurt just thinking about it.

Downtown was gaily decorated, and Christmas music was piped into the streets competing with Salvation Army bell ringers. People were bundled up; stores and bars did a bustling businesshappy folks buying each other cocktails. Churches had Nativity scenesand I believe the town did as well in the town squareours was actually a triangle.

In other words, these are scenes now only lived in Hallmark movies. Perhaps there are places in the northeast or Minnesota where they still play out. I dont know. I do know that after I returned home after living in SoCal everything had changedmostly the weather. Often, snow doesnt fall in quantity until January, and hard freezes are rarecertainly not enough for ice skating. The latter probably doesnt matter since sue-happy society has relegated skating to inside rinks; if you can find one. Much of the Christmas Hallmark scenario has gone the way of hayrides and apple-bobbing at Halloweenthat is, gone for good.

Also gone from yesteryear is (practically) everyone smoking, thinking maybe lighting-up helped drive away the chill; holiday-decorated cigarette cartons, and gifts like cigarette lighters, and other smoking paraphernalia. Christmas (not Holiday) specials were also different back-in-the-day featuring a mix of happy snowman and Santa Claus tunes with religious songs batting clean-up near the end of the show. The presentation was joyful and upbeat often with cast family members making an appearance: Perry Como, Lawrence Welk, Bing Crosby, Andy Williams, Arthur Godfrey, Pat Boone, etc., etc. That said, I am traumatized to this very day by one particular show ending. The scene was an attractive woman in whiteovercoat, hat, and muffwith snow falling and a white church steeple in the background. The light was filtered making the scene even more compelling. Music began with the familiar intro notes to O Holy Night. Then it happened; the woman opened her mouth and started to sing. It sounded like an out-of-tune Bob Dylan-type voice with poor enunciating skills. Talk about nails on a chalkboard or grinding gears. It was Cher! Now I have no problem with Cher except when she decides to warble a difficult song written for an operatic soprano. What were the producers thinking? It was gosh-awfulworse!

My point is Christmas is no longer like a Hallmark movie except in our memories or in the fantasies of younger folks. So-called political progressives are against Christmas songs, Christmas trees, Nativity scenes (crches), that racist Santa Claus dude, colored lights, and almost everything else that makes the season fun. Aside: Heres a good idea to get the whining wimps to buy-in. Why not call a crche, a three-sided homeless shelter? That PC label should stop their complaining. Nah. Who am I kidding? They love being miserable, and wantno, demandthe rest of us share their wretchedness.

Ive lived in the southwest desert for the past three Decembers. Sand substitutes for snow, and Saguaros for snowmenexcept for the blow-up kind from Walmart, and we have enough sunshine to lay some off on Pittsburgh. Kay still goes over-the-top decorating the inside of our home, and music by dead people fills the airBing Crosby, David Seville, Gene Autry, Ray Conniff, Nat King Cole, the Andrews Sisters, Mel Torme, Natalie Cole, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Perry Como

Come to think of it, in my youth decorating wasnt nearly as lavish as depicted in the made-for-TV movies. Mainly, we had a real tree with a few strands of lights, and colored spherical ornaments. You mainly saw the tree, not solid lights and hanging knick-knacks with no part of the tree visible. The rest of our home, and others, basically looked the same, that is undecorated, although some people did string colored outside lights on their eaves.

Kay grew up in Southern California where decorating throughout the house was typical maybe to make up for lack of a Winter climate. Her mom also loved the holiday season; and I suspect Kay relives her youth, and remembers her late mother during the process of converting our home into a Christmas showplace. When we lived in a home with three floors, there were four trees along with every other kind of Christmas paraphernalia. Me, I still enjoy the season as much as I did as a youngster, but no longer feel the excitement in the pit of my stomach that festooning a home used to bring. Dont get me wrong, I still like the look of the house when everything is done, but the prevailing thought that nags me constantly is what a pain in the rear its going to be to take it all down and stow it when the season passes. Other than that Grinch-like sentiment, all is well. I enjoy the smells, music, gatherings, drinks, and food. Im ambivalent about shopping, receiving and wrapping presents; and absolutely annoyed with the vocal minority of whining, tightly-sphinctered, politically correct, so-called progressive (actually regressive) steaming lumps of excrement in society than insist the season is racist and/or offensive.

In a few days, our community is going to have a ChristmaserHoliday Parade that ends up at the bandstand where a local band will play. For the benefit of our local Shalom Club, a really nice collection of friends and neighbors, I will present a Chanukah song about a dreidel that spins off the counter, down the stairs, out the door, and drills into the ground where a tree grows with millions of dreidels for all. That will be my tribute to Judas Maccabeus, the hammer, who led the Hasmoneans in kicking the crap out of Seleucid forces.

Bottom line: I consider myself fortunate for having grown up in the Golden Age of Hallmark Christmas when the scenes were real, not a mirageand free of people who attempt to stamp out anything and everything that brings joy. With that in mind, Merry Christmas, Seasons Greetings, Happy Holidays (select one).

Choosing The Right Fancy Dress For A Memorable Night

Choosing The Right Fancy Dress For A Memorable Night

Going to a costume-themed party is an exciting experience in life because you will get to wear a costume or fancy dress which characterizes your favorite superhero or fairy tale. Choosing the right fancy dress for the event will turn the experience a memorable night of your life. This could be your moment to shine and get noticed by wearing a fancy dress that will enhance your beauty and at the same time make you the star of the night.

The fancy dress that you might choose can be useful in different types of costume parties, prom nights, birthday themed parties, and other themed-events. Even in theatrical plays and costume competitions, fancy dresses are very much in demand. So if you are planning to buy one, make sure you have other occasions to use it for.

Most of the fancy dress ideas come from characters involved in history, movies, classical books, fairy tales, cartoons, and adventure stories. You can copy their outfits for your costumes or you can also go adventurous with your fancy dress by going different and designing your own unique set of fancy dress for the event.

For kids who are so excited to wear such fancy dresses for a competition or any kind of party, the parents are the ones who get to face the challenge since choosing a fancy dress for the little ones could be so difficult, especially if you are aiming to get the first prize. Although most fancy dresses that are available for little kids are usually from cartoon character ideas, there are still other available options if you prefer to look unfamiliar.

For teens to adults, most of the fancy dresses are character inspired as well, but there are still some people with creative and innovative minds that create unique designs for their own fancy dress.

If you are in need of a fancy dress for an upcoming event, whether it is a party or a competition, you can always create your own dress. But if you have no enough time to do it yourself, you can hire a costume or you can buy one. Many costume shops in Sydney offer their fancy dresses at affordable prices for hire or for rent. You can choose one that will suit the event you are going to attend to.

If you prefer to buy your fancy dress, you have to consider what type of theme the party is based, or if this is intended for a competition, you should know what theme you are trying to portray. If the theme idea is something unique or authentic, buying fancy dress on a tight budget would not be enough; you still have to further improve the design yourself based on your theme and creations.

If the costume is for ordinary themed-party only, you can hire fancy dresses at any costume shops near you. This option is more convenient for you since the design is already there and you will only need to pay for it and return it after the event. But before hiring a fancy dress, make sure you get the right size fit for you body to avoid problems. You should also check if the dress has no torn parts so you would not be accountable if ever you returned it damaged.

For all your fancy dress needs, Sydney has all the best costume shops where you can get your preferred designs. You can search for the shops online or visit the stores personally so you can compare designs and prices for your convenience and satisfaction. You will get the fancy dress at a fair price you can afford. Now you can enjoy any themed-party or competitions that require costumes without hurting your budget too much.

Choosing And Buying Inexpensive Laminated Flooring

Choosing And Buying Inexpensive Laminated Flooring

A laminate floor is a composite floor with either a chipboard or HDF core, bonded to a film of wood-effect veneer and covered with a laminated surface. Although it may look like wood veneer flooring, it's not. Most laminate floors feature a photographic representation of wood grain and, unlike wood veneers, laminates cannot be sanded or refurbished once it starts to show wear.

In terms of aesthetic appeal, it's hard to beat laminates or wood-look overlay floors. They offer great value, plus they're warm underfoot, flexible and have their good looks last a long time. However, the wide range of laminate flooring available can be somewhat confusing - to properly choose the right laminate flooring to buy, you need to understand what flooring will best suit your needs.

Whether you're constructing a new house or just remodeling, laminate can offer unique, attractive flooring - especially in high-traffic areas. And if you love how real hardwood looks but don't like the high cost, laminate floors can provide the same look for a much lower price. The best thing about laminate floors is that they can be installed easily by the homeowner.

Laminate floors were invented in Europe and are now a popular flooring choice for North American consumers who can choose from a huge assortment of manufacturers offering diverse styles and colors. Laminate flooring is available in various plank widths and square-tile sizes to suit different floor measurements. The designs include realistic hardwood, stone and tile..

Most manufacturers of laminate flooring use sophisticated computer technology to develop realistic designs, and the top layer -- the "wear layer" -- is incredibly durable. Laminate flooring is resistant to most stains, spills, burns and scratches.

Laminate floors are "floated" over most common substrates, such as concrete, plywood, and even other floor coverings. The planks and tiles have edges that lock together, but aren't secured to the subfloor.

There are also some laminate floors that don't require glue at all and simply snap together. Glueless installation makes laminate floors easy to install, with no professional assistance needed. Some brands come pre-glued from the factory and only require a little moisture to activate the adhesive.

Where to buy inexpensive laminated flooring

Some of the most popular and affordable laminate flooring is made by Mohawk, Pergo, Mannington, Wilsonart, Armstrong, Shaw, Quick-Step, Witex and Alloc. Laminate flooring is widely available from retailers in your area, or you can search for flooring online. You can find great deals on the Internet, since many Internet dealers don't have the same overhead expenses as local flooring retailers.

Choose A Suitable Topic for Your Short Movie

Choose A Suitable Topic for Your Short Movie

We always watch movies in movie theatres, and these movies always last as long as 90 minutes or more. However, we can watch different short videos or short films on video websites online, and these short movies last less than 45 minutes, and some short videos only last for several minutes. There are many ideas for short films, and you can choose one favored and shoot a short film by yourself. You can either use a simple digital camera or rent Sony PDW F1600. Sure, your short movie will have good quality if you shoot the short movie using a professional camera. It all depends on you and your budget.

Decide the type of your short video. You can get inspirations from personal stories, history, current events and other movies. When you find good stories from these sources, you can make a decision on the short films genre type. For example, you can make a horror short movie if you decide to shoot a frightening story.

If you are the first time to shoot a short movie, you can choose to shoot a short drama. Write a movie script about your personal story. For an instance, you can shoot a period of time when you finally fulfilled the task which you thought it was mission impossible initially. Ask your friends to join your filmmaking team. And then all of you can search for interesting materials for the film together, including reading magazines, searching the internet or doing brainstorming. These moments are precious memories when you finished the short film. Besides the film footage, you also need to choose good background music, which can emphasize the mood of the short movie.

Addition to the drama, many people also like to shoot a short comedy. If you tell a really funny joke or story, then everyone will be amused by the short film. You can create original jokes or just make some adjustments to some classical jokes. There are many funny things in everyday life, and you can collect different materials and sort them into a unique joke. You can either make a silent comedy or a dialogue-driven comedy. When you shoot the silent comedy, your actors need to use rich and exaggerated body language to make audience understand your joke. Besides original jokes, you can also get inspiration from comic strips or short stories. Your every effort is worthy when the audience are amused by your short movie.

Choices in Hurricane Window Protection

Choices in Hurricane Window Protection

Hurricane shutters are the most economical, therefore the most popular solution chosen by homeowners. However, hurricane impact windows and doors are also very popular because of the added benefits of convenience, security enhancement, better energy efficiency, sound proofing and its attractiveness over shutters. The least expensive system is plywood or panels; these offer great protection, but take a great deal of time to install.

Your considerations: Cost, appearance, and convenience (this one is often under estimated).

First, understand what it is your protecting: it's not just the shards of glass from the broken window that are dangerous - having your roof blown off will really get your attention. During a hurricane, the strong wind that blows over your home creates a 'lift' effect on your roof. If a window or door opening is blown open during the storm, this creates an additional upward 'push' on the roof, thus doubling or tripling the lifting effect. This is how roofs are blown off.

Here are the vitals on your choices for hurricane window protection for your home.

Myth Buster- Window Film and a little info on Impact Windows:

Window film can reduce the sun's damaging rays into your home and it is promoted to be a theft deterrent. It may also very well reduce the chance for shards of glass to go flying through your home in the event of a hurricane, but do you really think slapping a thin piece of film on your existing windows is going to keep your roof on in the event of a hurricane? By comparison, impact windows are almost three times as thick as regular window glass. Hurricane windows are made up of two layers of glass and sandwiched between these layers of glass is a strong tear resistant interlayer (film) that keeps the glass together in the event it is broken. They are much like the windshield of automobiles.

A key factor in the strength of impact windows is how the glass & interlayer are VERY securely attached to a reinforced frame (both mechanically and thru the use of industrial adhesives) so the impact glass does NOT detached even under extreme pressure. The goal is to establish hurricane window protection for all openings (whether one does this through the use of hurricane shutters or hurricane windows, or a combination of the two) and keep the openings sealed so as to not cause a change in pressure inside the home thus blowing off the roof. The idea of putting hurricane window film on a regular window with its lightweight frame and expecting it to even remotely resemble a Miami-Dade approved impact window is ridiculous. Yes, it would be better than nothing, but your money would be better spent on plywood.

Plywood Shutters ($2 - $4 / sq. ft.):

A popular and effective choice, installing plywood shutters to fit snugly inside the window or door frame is an efficient and affordable option for homeowners. These shutters were effective even in the highest winds of Hurricane Andrew, and are relatively easy to install. If you are going to use this method, the plywood needs to be 5/8" to 3/4" thick, and since it takes a lot of time to prepare, it should be cut to size way before we have a storm bearing down on us.

Positives:
Most inexpensive of all hurricane protective systems
Strong and can provide excellent protection

Negatives:
Require storage, but can be stacked
Heavy and difficult to handle, hanging may require more than one person
Require the most time to install
Not a safe option for 2 story homes

Storm Prep: 20 " 25 minutes per window (if pre-cut); 5 to 8 hours for an average home

Storm panel hurricane shutters ($5 - $8 / sq. ft.):

Another popular and effective choice, these hurricane shutters are typically steel or aluminum corrugated panels that attach to the walls around windows and doors. There are several mounting methods using either pre-mounted tracks and bolts or just bolts.

Positives:
Most inexpensive of the 'permanent' hurricane shutter systems
Strong and can provide excellent protection
Can be installed by a handy DIY

Negatives:
Require storage, but can be stacked
Can be heavy and difficult to handle, hanging may require more than one person
Time consuming - other than plywood, these require the 2nd most time to install
Have sharp edges " can be dangerous
Not a convenient option for 2 story homes

Storm Prep: 15 - 20 minutes per window; 4 to 6 hours for an average home

Accordion Hurricane Shutters ($15 - $18 / sq. ft.):

Accordion hurricane shutters are attached directly to your home at the window or door opening, folded up when they are not in use and easily unfolded, accordion-style when you need to cover and protect the opening during a storm.

Positives:
Easily deployable by one person when they are needed.
Permanently attached next to the window, don't require storage.
Some can be locked and may be used as a theft deterrent.

Negatives:
Bulky and not attractive. Seriously consider aesthetics before purchasing these.
More mechanical parts, so may require more maintenance than other devices.

Storm Prep: 30 minutes for an entire home

Colonial and Bahama Hurricane Shutters ($18 - $28 / sq. ft.):

These are louvered hurricane shutters that attach directly to the wall beside or above the windows

Positives:
Permanently attached next to, or above the window, don't require storage.
Easily deployable by one person when they are needed.
Since they are decorative they can beautify the home as well as protect it.

Negatives:
Cannot be used as protection for doors, must be combined with another system.
Designs and style may limit their use.

Storm Prep: 30 minutes to an hour for an entire home

Roll-Down Hurricane Shutters ($35 - $55 / sq. ft.):

These hurricane shutters attach permanently above the window in an enclosed box when they are not in use and roll down, either manually with a hand crank or electronically by motor, when you need them.

Positives:
Permanently attached next to, or above the window, don't require storage.
Easily deployable by one person when they are needed.
Since they can be locked, they make an excellent theft deterrent.

Negatives:
One of the most expensive systems.
Requires a battery backup so they can be operated during power outages.

Storm Prep: Minimal, easiest of the hurricane shutter systems

Impact Windows ($40 - $55+ / sq. ft.):

Hurricane impact windows can withstand hurricane debris and completely eliminate the need for hurricane shutters. It costs more to retrofit an existing home, but is most cost effective if a homeowner is considering replacing old windows anyway. This is the most value added of the hurricane window protection systems, since impact windows also improve energy efficiency, are an excellent theft deterrent, provide sound deadening from outside noises, as well as give your home hurricane window protection in the event of a storm. Further, adding new impact windows is likely to increase the value of your home, more so than with any of the other hurricane protective systems.

Positives:
Eliminates the need for hurricane shutters
Great for people with 2nd homes- the home is hurricane ready all the time.
Excellent theft deterrent, nearly impossible to break thru the glass.
Added value of sound deadening & energy efficiency over regular windows.

Negatives:
Like roll-down shutters, this is one of the most expensive systems.

Storm Prep: NONE

CONCLUSION:

Keep in mind that if the aesthetics of shutters is bothering you, but the cost of impact windows is nearly out of reach, you can always combine the two. Install impact windows on the front, and possibly the sides of your home. Then protect the window openings that are cannot be seen from the street with shutters.

And don't underestimate the hassle of installing shutters every time there is a hurricane warning. I frequently go out to do estimates for impact windows on homes that have shutter panels because the homeowner is tired of dealing with installing them.

Finally, if your existing windows are in need of replacement because they are old, I encourage you to retrofit them with impact windows since the cost difference between non-impact windows with hurricane shutters versus only impact windows is marginal.

Once you have narrowed your choices to what type of hurricane window protection system is best for your situation, talk to an expert to help you in your final selection. Depending on which of the above systems best suits you, be it hurricane shutters or impact windows, there are many different style choices, and manufacturers who offer different options. Window contractors are your best experts. How to find one? Ideally, get one who is referred to you by a family member, neighbor or a friend. If they have done a good job for them, this person can provide you with a wealth of knowledge that has been learned over the years. If you must select a contractor you find online, check out their references (at least 5), call them, and go look at the contractor's work.

Child Acting Scams And How To Spot Them

Child Acting Scams And How To Spot Them

Most parents think their child holds all the potential in the world to become the next big child star like, Gary Coleman or Raven Symone. For this reason many parents easily fall victim to scam artists that claim to be legitimate acting or modeling agencies. If you don't know how the scenario goes here it is: a company runs an ad claiming to be looking for talented children for commercials, television shows, movies and print ads, then you arrange a meeting at a hotel or some rented out office space so they can "evaluate" your child. Who can blame a parent for think that their child has the chance to grace the covers of magazines, be a movie star or a national commercial star.

After these "acting and modeling agency" scouts lure you in with their persuasive ads, they have you come to a hotel where they have you sit and listen to someone talk about the fame and fortune your child can get from acting and modeling, they're just getting you excited when they do this. They sound even more legitimate when during the hotel meeting, they weave some children out for not having what it takes and deciding to keep your child, bringing your hopes even higher for your child. Once they tell you that your child was kept for having "what it takes" they then ask you for an "investment" for your child to go further. Most of these scam agencies ask you to pay multiple fees, the most common "fees" they ask you to pay is for a session with "top talent agencies from Los Angeles and New York City".

Just when it seems like this is your child's big break you head to the meeting to find nobody there and just when you call the scam artist "talent agents" back about the situation, their contact details are useless and you've just put your self in debt between the $3,000 $4,500 range. Now don't get me wrong here, these so called acting and modeling agencies do provide acting and modeling "lessons" but they do not guarantee your child any acting or modeling jobs, at least 99% of the time. So if you fall for these scams, you will more than likely not be able to get your money back because they will tell you that they didn't guarantee your child any work.

A new way that modeling scouts try to get your money is by going out and finding your child at local shopping malls and other public locations. They approach you and tell you how good your child looks and how they could possibly be a big star, then they give you a card and a short monologue for your child to go home and practice before they visit the "agency".

The common question that is asked is how to spot these scam artists who claim to be acting and modeling agents, it's quite simple when you call the "agency" or when you're approached by a "scout" ask them for their credentials, ask them to list some of their clients and possibly give you their contact information for verification. Most likely if you know how to spot a scam when you see one, you won't have to worry about being ripped off by these guys.
